Here at Triumph we hope another storm does not affect South Florida again. Unfortunately, NOAA predicts the Atlantic area could see a higher than normal number of storms and hurricanes for the 2017 season. The likelihood that Miami-Dade, Broward, or Palm Beach county will see a storm this season is therefore very high. Preparation for a storm beforehand can be a lifesaving step for you and your family and can help protect your property.
Your storm survival items should be placed together where they are easy to find. There are a few basic items that should be includes in your storm survival bag.
First aid supplies (bandages, alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, aspirin, anti-biotic cream)
Cash– Special note on cash, put together as much as you may need for a few days including for gas and food. Have small bills like $20 and $1s, because you may not be able to get change. If the electricity goes out credit card scanners will not work and your Bank ATM may not be working.
Gas- fill up your tank and take gas for your generator
It is important to have hurricane shutters or impact windows if you live in Florida. If you try to purchase shutters right before a hurricane you may not be able to find any available, and you will probably not have time to install them. Your roof and windows should be built to withstand strong winds by being reinforced and impact resistant.
All damaged branches and trees should be removed at the beginning of hurricane season.
Gutters and water drainage pipes should be cleared of debris
All outside items like chairs and small plants should be brought in doors.
It is important that you also have a plan for your family in case there is a hurricane evacuation order for your area or the hurricane strength is very high. A hurricane 3 or higher can have catastrophic flooding and winds. When you are informed the hurricane maybe a category 3 or higher you should begin considering evacuation even if it is not ordered yet. If your area is ordered to evacuate do so immediately do not wait. Once the hurricane is 6 hours out storm force winds may start and it will be too late to leave the area .
Have a copy of your home insurance policy and contact numbers
Watch for evacuation orders
Know your evacuation route
Have an emergency meeting place in your home such as a closet or bathroom with no windows
Have an emergency meeting place in your neighborhood for in case your family is split up during the storm.
Every member of your family should have a phone and important phone numbers list
Plan for your pets (food, dishes, toys, crates, leashes).
After the Storm
Please do not leave your home or go outside until the storm is completely over. Especially do not go out in the eye of the storm. Once the storm is over there are a few things you should do.
Do not touch any broken electrical wires or broken gas lines
Do not turn on the electricity if there is water damage in your home
Take photos of the damage
Make a list of all damages
Review your insurance information and call in your claim, do not wait
